Sophie the Giraffe – The Teething Toy That Stands the Test of Time

Sophie (the French) Giraffe was born in Paris in 1961 and is celebrating her 50th Birthday on May 25th (Saint Sophie’s Day of course).  From the moment she was introduced to the French market, she’s been a favorite teething toy among children and mothers alike.  Her shape makes her easy for tiny baby hands to grip and she appeals to all of babies’ five senses: sight (the contrasting light/dark colors), sound (she squeaks!), taste (she’s made from natural rubber and is soft & chewy), touch (she’s made of soft natural rubber), and smell (scent of natural rubber from the Hevea tree).

I love most things that (a) are French; and (b) have heritage, so it was a no-brainer that I’d pick up a Sophie Giraffe for the Tiny Dancer.  From the moment I saw Sophie in her cute packaging I knew why she’s been a favorite for so long.  She’s adorable (even cuter in person) and she’s really soft.  Her squeak is the perfect little sound that grabs baby’s attention.  I love Sophie and whenever I give Sophie to the Tiny Dancer her eyes light up.  The Tiny Dancer can grip Sophie easily, and like all things that she can hold, Sophie ends up in her mouth.  The Tiny Dancer hasn’t managed to make her squeak on her own yet, but she loves it when I squeak Sophie for her.

Sophie is an adorable toy whose longstanding popularity is a testament to what a great children’s toy she is.  She is safe for children as young as newborns and she has more to offer kids as they develop.  Sophie is available in stores or online at Babies R’ Us.
