Tips For Organizing Your Home

tips for organizing your homeOk, we’ve all been there – sometimes the house gets a little crazy.  Overflowing laundry baskets, toys all over the floor, unopened mail piling up.  My mental state is a direct reflection of my living environment.  When my surroundings get disorganized, my thoughts become jumbled.  To keep my mind clear, I try to keep the house pretty tidy as much as possible all the time.  I’ll admit it’s a bit more difficult with a one-year old wreaking havoc but I’ve learned to be efficient with the little time that I have.  Here are five quick tips for organizing your home that you can carry over with you to any particular room of your house.

1. Everything Has Its Place.  In order to put stuff away, the stuff needs to have a resting place.  Store similar things together, for example, keep all your linens in one place.  Also if space allows, store the stuff in an area of the room or closet that makes sense.  So, if you have a linen closet, keep your towels and sheets there – rather than in an extra cupboard in the kitchen.

2.  Storage.  I’m a fan of bins and containers – especially for small items.  Storage bins help keep things together and they also make the most of small spaces by maximizing the area in which you can store.  For example, if you have a shelf and just put things on the shelf you only have one level of storage.  But, if you can put 2 bins on top of each other on the shelf, you’re maximizing the space you have to work with.

3.  Label or Color Code.  Label, label, label.  Or if you don’t want labels everywhere, color code.  These are two easy ways of keeping track of things.  This technique works especially well in home offices, kitchens andd children’s rooms.

4. Put Things Away.  The partner to step 1 (everything must have its place), when you use something, put it away immediately.  This is probably the most important step and the one step that gets most neglected leading to a disorganized home.  You may feel like you don’t have time to put things away as you use them but it saves a lot of time.  In the end, you waste way more time looking for stuff that’s not in its place.

5. Use, Donate, Throw Out. Every six-months to one-year you should go through your stuff and decide what you will use, donate or throw out.  Stuff has a funny way of piling up and accumulating and a good way to stay organized is to only keep stuff that you actually use.  Don’t get stuck hoarding stuff and really ask yourself if you need everything you’re holding on to.

If you follow these five simple steps you will be on your way to living in a more organized home.  Happy sorting!

First Look: Lanvin Petite

Lanvin Petite

A while back I mentioned that Lanvin was introducing a children’s wear collection and now a first look at the collection has been circulating online.  The pieces are so lovely and I can only hope to aspire to wear dresses this gorgeous as an adult – let alone as a child.  But we know there are babies that live the glamorous life from a very early age and now, they can wear Lanvin Petite with their Baby Dior shirts and Gucci booties.

It seems Alber Elbaz stayed true to his “superluxe approach” and these are no ordinary dresses for girls.  Little ladies aged 4 to 10 can now look forward to wearing luxurious dresses in “washed organza embroidered with crystals, satin ribbon and grosgrain, draped or pleated tulle.”  Elbaz even created adorable, shiny, patent ballerina flats to go along with the frocks – complete with pompom.  (Telegraph).

If the Lanvin Petite dresses are out of your price range, you can opt to purchase one of four exclusive rag dolls – each dressed in the collection – with part of the proceeds of the sale of the dolls benefiting Designing Hope.  The collection will begin being sold in boutiques in November.

I love these dresses and little trench coats – they’re fun and feminine and embody a happy, frilly childhood.  I can’t wait to see more!  I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to afford the dresses – or the rag dolls.  Is it bad that I’m secretly wishing a more affordable line will knock Lanvin Petite off?  Or that maybe H&M will team up with Lanvin again but this time for children’s wear?  Shh! Don’t tell them I said so!

What Am I Getting The Husband for Father’s Day??

AHHH! I know, I’m the blogger I should have some fancy post with amazing gift ideas for Father’s Day.  Well, life has been hectic the past few weeks – and especially the past few days – so I haven’t had time to put a gift guide together.  Instead, I need some help on what to get the Tiny Dancer’s dad.  I know I’ll come up with something and actually writing about it has put some ideas in my head so I’m feeling better about this now.  Are you in the same snafu?  Here are some quick tips because the clock is a ticking!

1.  Events – is the baby daddy a sports fan? Music lover?  He must like something!  Get him tickets and you can have a nice outing as a family.

2.  Dinner/Barbecue/Picnic – what’s the line?  The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?  It’s true.  Feed him.  He’ll like it.

3.  Collector – does he collect stuff?  Add to the collection!

4.  Hobby – what hobbies does he have?  Get him something that will help him further into his hobby.

5.  Never Fails – you can’t go wrong with a tech gadget.  Ever.

I hope these quick tips work for you! I need them to start working for me right about now!

More Sketches of “Young Versace” Collection

Versace Kids Fashion LineA month ago I mentioned that Versace would be introducing a children’s clothing collection called Young Versace for Spring 2012.  I found some more sketches of the new collection.  What do you think of it?  It seems like adult clothing shrunken down for kids which is always pretty cute.  I can’t wait to see the line when it comes out!

Workouts During Pregnancy

prenatal yoga

A few weeks ago I talked about the benefits of exercising while pregnant and gave some tips for working out while pregnant. Though exercising while pregnant is a great – not all workouts are good for pregnant ladies. Here are some of the best exercises to do while pregnant. Remember to always consult your physician before starting a new exercise program!

Kegels
Kegel exercises consist of relaxing and contracting the muscles that form part of the pelvic floor. These are probably the most important exercise a pregnant woman can perform. Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles can help you in labor and delivery, can minimize bladder leaks and hemerroids and can help perineal healing.

Walking
Walking is easy – we do it everyday. Take those few extra steps if you feel up to it and walking is a great way to stay fit while you’re expecting.

Pregnatal Yoga
Yoga is a great way to stay fit and relieve stress – especially when you are pregnant. So much so that yoga workouts specifically geared toward pregnant women – prenatal yoga – are very popular. When I was pregnant I practiced prenatal yoga several times a week – and in my last trimester I did it everyday. I practiced yoga before I was pregnant so I wanted a prenatal yoga routine that was rigorous enough for someone with yoga experience, but light enough for my pregnant body. My favorite workout was Jennifer Wolfe’s Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga DVDs. I loved that there was a long form and short form DVD and there were variations depending on what trimester you are in.

Water Aerobics / Swimming
Swimming and water aerobics are some of the safest exercises pregnant women can do. The water protects your muscles and joints while you raise your heart rate without overheating.

Remember to take it easy and stop if you are in pain.  Stay healthy and keep enjoying your workouts while you are pregnant!

Cube Dog App – Fun for the Family

cube dog app

Thank you to Cube Dog for sponsoring this review. For more information about Cube Dog please visit the Facebook page or download it on iTunes.

Our household is a highly allergic one.  The only pets we could ever hope to have are fish or reptiles.  You can’t pet fish and well, reptiles, are not really my cup of tea.  The problem is that the Tiny Dancer loves dogs.  Everytime she sees one she gets so excited and wants to play with it.  I sometimes get sad that she won’t have the pleasure of a puppy because her father and I would be sniffling and have watery eyes for the rest of our lives.

I recently have been finding apps for pregnant ladies, new moms, babies and toddlers.  A new app that just came out this week is Cube Dog – and it quite literally entertains the whole family.  Basically, you customize your own dog – you choose the color, head shape, snout shape, ears, eyes and body.  Once the cube dog is named then you get to play with it.  You can pet it, play fetch and watch it sleep.  You can even take a picture with your cube dogs.

I created 3 cube dogs:  Ruby, Jade and Violet.  The Tiny Dancer loved watching the process and loved interacting with the dogs on the screen.  The  full 3D graphics with ability to rotate and zoom and high-quality 3D animations make it not only fun for the kids but fun for adults as well.  I could see this app coming in really handy in the middle of a meltdown!  The Tiny Dancer may not be able to have a real puppy, but at least she can let her imagination run wild with her cube dogs.

The Cube Dog App is compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch 4 with camera.  Be sure to check out Cube Dog on Facebook to enter a fun contest running June 6-13.

While Cube Dog provided me with the app to review, the opinions I’ve expressed here are solely my own and represent my honest viewpoint. Cube Dog, Clever Girls Collective and I promote Blog With Integrity.

Made In The Shade: Summer Hats for Infant and Toddler Girls

sun hats for infant and toddler girls Clockwise from top left: Old Navy, Gymboree, babygap, babygap, babygap

You can never be too careful when it comes to sun protection. A few weeks ago I showed some top picks for baby sunscreens and I tried out Neutrogena’s Wet Skin Sunblock. You can take a step further and get your little girls sun hats to protect them from the suns powerful rays. Hats are the icing on adorable summer outfits and come in any style you could imagine. From cowboy hats to fedoras, floppy hats to cloches, you can find the perfect hat to top it all off. The hardest part will be to get the tiny dancers to keep them on! Here are some of my favorite summer hats for infant and toddler girls…
