Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
you’ll get by…
–Smile, by Charlie Chaplin
Have you ever walked down the street and have a stranger tell you to smile? It’s happened to me a few times and I have to admit, the first few times I was really annoyed. Instead of smiling, I went to the other end of the spectrum and was angry. I thought: “How could he tell me to smile? What right does he have?” I’m actually smiling as I write this because I realize how silly I was.
One of the best ways to get yourself out of a funk is by smiling. I don’t understand all of the science behind it, but studies have shown that smiling can actually put you in a better mood. In fact, it’s one of those natural human responses that is the same across cultures and time zones. When people are happy, they smile.
I learned this first hand because of the Tiny Dancer. When she was a few weeks old we started seeing hints of expressions. It wasn’t until she was a few months old that we saw a real, responsive smile. It wasn’t something that she learned or was asked to do, she smiled because she was feeling pure happiness. As she gets older (and the teeth come in) her smile gets bigger, more expressive and is usually accompanied by a shriek or giggle. Seeing her smile always puts a smile on my face.
That’s the great thing about smiles – they’re contagious. Finally! Something you can catch that will make you feel good. When I’m in need of a boost I try to smile to let me face relax and lift my spirits. And when I see that someone is down, I do my best to get them to smile. As a last resort, I just tell them to “Smile!”
