Where Did All the Colors Go? by Adrien Broom

where did all the colors go adrien broom

Adrien Broom is an artist and photographer who has been working on a project called “Where Did All the Colors Go?” — an art project destined to become a children’s book, short film and all around multi-media extravaganza for your tablets.

The premise is simple. The story is told through the eyes of a little girl and when she wakes up she realizes color has disappeared. As she moves on from room to room, she rediscovers colors. Though meant for children, the imagery is so enchanting it’s hard not to get drawn in — perhaps it appeals to the kids in us.

You can hear Adrien talk about the project below. She’s already met all of her funding so we can expect this to become a reality. In fact, she’s slated to have an exhibit at the Chrysler Museum of Art, in Virginia, in 2014.

Overview of Project/ Kickstarter Video from Adrien Broom on Vimeo.

I’m not sure when the book will be out but I’ll keep you posted because I definitely want a copy for myself, um, I mean, for the tiny dancer!

Mr. Men & Little Miss Out Now On Nook & IBooks

mr men and little miss

Sanrio, Inc. and Penguin Young Readers Group have released forty of the most beloved Mr. Men Little Miss titles in the Nook and iBookstore for the first time ever. Narrated by Audie and Grammy award-winner Jim Dale, these bright, charming books, with their easily recognizable characters, are easy enough for young readers and witty enough for adults. A selection of forty titles – all priced at $3.99 – are available in the iBookstore and Nookstore.

With children using their parents’ (or their own) technology so much these days it’s nice to see that child-appropriate content is becoming more and more available. I love this series, and now it will be easier than ever to share Mr. Men and Little Miss with your little ones.

Grab a Hat and Read With the Cat Today!

read across america

Today is the National Education Associations Read Across America Day and since Dr. Seuss’s birthday is tomorrow, the annual initiative has a Dr. Seuss theme. There are events planned today and tomorrow across the United States where adults will read to children – the more red and white striped hats the better!

You may remember I recently wrote about the benefits of reading to children and if you’ve been lagging today is a great day to get started. Remember as Dr. Seuss said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” (I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!, Dr. Seuss)

Have a wonderful weekend!

babyGap Introduces Limited Edition Peter Rabbit Collection

babygap peter rabbit collection

Yesterday babyGap introduced a limited edition Peter Rabbit collection inspired by Beatrix Potter’s infamous children’s book The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The line is made for infants up to size 24 months and consists of soft knit graphic bodysuits, brightly colored denim, whimsical one-pieces and patterned dresses. I’m especially loving the little bunny ears on sweaters and beanies. You can find the babyGap Peter Rabbit collection at Gap stores or on Gap.com.

Color Me Manga Graffiti Coloring Book

Color Me Manga Graffiti Coloring Book Shiro
If you are anything like me then your child has stacks of coloring books but no matter how many different ones you buy, boredom inevitably sets in. Some children, mine included, would rather vandalize than color in books – that is, my daughter would much prefer to scribble on the walls and furniture than in her coloring books. So when I cam across the Color Me Manga Graffiti coloring book, I thought I hit the jackpot.

Color Me Manga Graffiti Coloring Book Shiro

Color Me Manga Graffiti is a coloring book with drawings by the Japanese female graffiti artist Shiro. Her cute and funny characters and graffiti styles appeal to children as well as to the young at heart. Shiro’s cheerful mix of Hip Hop flavor and manga-inspired characters offer inspiration in fun coloring designs for people of all ages.

Color Me Manga Graffiti Coloring Book Shiro

Shiro is a female graffiti artist from Japan. She expresses her own vision of life through her original characters and she is inspired by the creativity of old-school Hip Hop. Shiro loves traveling, painting, making friends and leaving her footprints all over the world. She is an accomplished artist and has participated in community awareness murals and other large-scale graffiti projects as well as gallery art shows.

Now the little ones can learn about graffiti, learn the art of filling in and hopefully stay off the walls at home! You can order the Color Me Manga Graffiti Coloring Book here.

Now I Am Big! and I Can Do It Myself! Book Review

now i am big and i can do it myself book review

Growing from a baby to a toddler is an important developmental milesetone for children. Kids learn to express themselves verbally and are physically able to do more on their own. I see this everyday with the Tiny Dancer – she’s fearless and always trying to do new things – by herself! When I received Now I Am Big! and I Can Do It Myself! from Abrams Appleseed, they could not have come at a better time.

now i am big and i can do it myself book review

Now I Am Big! and I Can Do It Myself! are the stories of a boy and a girl who celebrate growing taller and stronger and being able to do things on their own. The stories are both empowering and entertaining for kids and help them realize how much they have accomplished.

now i am big and i can do it myself book review

Written by Stephen Krensky and illustrated by Sara Gillingham, Now I Am Big! and I Can Do It Myself! are some of my new favorite books in the Tiny Dancer’s collection. The encouraging message along with the captivating retro-inspired illustrations make these books a new family favorite – for kids and adults. You can find Now I Am Big! and I Can Do It Myself! on Amazon.com.

Book Review: Hippopposites by Janik Coat

hippoposites janik coat book review

I recently received Hippoposites from Abrams Appleseed to review and so I gave it to the Tiny Dancer to test it out. Hippoposites is a book that explores opposites and vocabulary through sleek graphic design and a friendly hippopotamuses. Written and designed by Janik Coat, a French graphic designer, the striking images in the book are child-friendly and also appeal to design-savvy parents. The book is visual and tactile to help show rather than tell and gives Hippoposites interactive features. Hippoposites passed the Tiny Dancer test – she was engaged in the imagery and it’s a book that she can peruse on her own or I can sit down with her and go over all of the educational elements with her. You can find Hippoposites on Amazon.com.

YOYAMART – A Design Boutique for the Whole Family

yoyamart
While I was in New York a few weeks ago I stopped by a boutique called Yoyamart, a family-oriented design store. When I first walked in I knew I was in a special shop. Unlike other children’s stores, Yoyamart is as appealing to adults as it is to children. The walls are lined with collectible vinyl figures and fun plush toys – the kind that I still collect, but that kids love too.

yoyamart

You can find anything you would need at Yoyamart from toys to books and educational toys, you’ll never be at a loss to buying a child (or a big kid) a gift.  I also loved the selection of apparel, footwear and accessories.  You can find designer clothing for kids from lines like Custo, Derhy, Munster, Dino e Lucia, Petite Louie and Bellerose.  The shoe wall was my favorite – they had mini versions of a lot of my favorite kicks including Vans and Native Shoes.  And, Yoyamart carries my favorite kid’s jewelry line Hijo Hija by Cubannie Links.

yoyamart

If you’re not in NYC, don’t worry, you can get the Yoyamart experience online at Yoyamart.com.  If you do visit NYC, then you definitely need to stop by Yoyamart – you can find it at:

Yoyamart

Book Review: “Huff & Puff” by Claudia Rueda

huff and puff book review

I received a copy of Huff & Puff by Claudia Rueda from Abrams Appleseed so I gave it the best test I could – I sat down to read it to the Tiny Dancer and let her peruse it on her own. Huff & Puff is a variant of The Three Little Pigs story – one that is much more kid friendly and not nearly as scary. At each interval, the reader is invited to “huff & puff” the houses down which the Tiny Dancer loves participating in. We sit and huff & puff together until she giggles and flips the page.

huff and puff book review

The Tiny Dancer huffing and puffing away

I love Huff & Puff because it’s not as violent as the Three Little Pigs and the Tiny Dancer loves huffing and puffing. She now takes my hand and pulls me to the book shelf and reaches for this book for me to read to her. It’s definitely a new family favorite. You can buy Huff & Puff on Amazon.com.
