Sponsored by HP & Intel: Travel In Style

To recognize the launch of the Envy 4 Touchsmart Ultrabook™ with Intel® Core™ processors I was asked to write about Traveling in Style. As mamas, we try to be prepared for everything which leads to over-packing. Since we have to travel with so much gear for the little ones, it helps to keep our own stuff on the light side. As an avid over-packer, I know that’s easier said than done but I know in my heart what I SHOULD be doing. Here are some tips for packing light – if only now I could follow my own rules!

Make a list – check it twice

Travel

The key to packing light is planning. I have a travel checklist saved on my computer and before I start packing I print it out so I know what I need. Having a list that you can stick to makes it easier to avoid over-packing and bringing things that you may not need. Having the list also helps save time and helps you remember things that seem obvious but sometimes get left behind. The one time my husband didn’t use the list for a business trip he left his pajamas behind! You can download the full travel checklist here. Feel free to customize it for your family.

Pick a color scheme and stick to it

color coordinate

One of the ways to avoid over-packing is to pick a color scheme and stick to it. First, you avoid bringing extra items that don’t fit into the color scheme. Second, if everything works together color-wise, you can pack fewer pieces and make different outfits made up of coordinating pieces.

Choose items that you can roll or lay flat and don’t need ironing
flat

When packing, lightweight jersey and linen are your friend. Choose items that you can easily roll or lay flat as that method of packing takes up less space and leaves you more room to bring back items that you bought on your vacation.

Pick versatile items you can dress down or up and re-wear them
dress down or dress up

In order to cut down on the amount of pieces you need to pack, choose items that you could easily dress down or dress up so you get more mileage out of every item you have with you. You’ll have more options and you’ll have something dressy in case you have an unexpected fancy event.

Accessorize

accessories

If you’re staying in your color palette and choosing items you can dress down or up the way you can really jazz up your outfits is with accessories. Using accessories is one of the easiest way to dress up or dress down an outfit. Since we’re trying to avoid over-packing, accessories are a great way to change your look without taking up too much room in your luggage. Just make sure that the pieces are in your color theme!

I hope these tips help you and your family travel in style! Buon Voyage!

Sponsored by HP & Intel: Add A Touch of Luxury To Your Life

To recognize the launch of the HP Spectre XT TouchSmart Ultrabook™ powered by Intel® Core™ processors I was asked to write about adding a Touch of Luxury to our lives. As a mom I know first hand laziness that could set in when it comes to personal appearance when you have to worry about getting everyone else ready. I will admit, I drop off my tiny dancer to school in sweat pants. Not yoga pants, but grey fleece sweatpants. But I draw the line there. Any other time I leave the house I try to look put together. It only takes a few more minutes and makes me feel a lot better than when I look like a scrub.

When you take the time out to make yourself look good, it automatically translates to you feeling better about yourself. Not only that, but you’re setting a good example for your kids. Here are some quick ways to add a Touch of Luxury to your everyday style…

perfume

Wear Perfume
This is probably the quickest way to add a Touch of Luxury but one of the most worthwhile. Scent is so intertwined with memory and emotion just a spritz of your favorite scent will make you smell lovely and lift your spirits.

Wear Clothing – Not Workout Wear
Aside from dropping off the little one at school – or when I’m actually on my way to or from the gym – I wear clothing in public. I don’t dress to the nines, but a pair of chinos and a collared-button up shirt are very comfortable and make you look put together in snap. It takes just as long to put on pants or jeans as it does to put on sweat pants.

makeup

Put On Some Lipstick (0r lipgloss, or mascara…)
So you don’t have time to make yourself up completely? Then what’s the one thing that you rely on for a face pick me up? Lipstick? Mascara? Whatever it is for you – put it on. You will look and feel better. I personally don’t just use one item but I’ve gotten my casual, everyday makeup application down to less than five minutes and I don’t leave the house without makeup (except when I’m wearing sweat pants and dropping off the little one to school).

Use a Real Handbag Not a Diaper Bag
I don’t get the design of most diaper bags – just because your carrying baby products the bag does not need to scream “baby!”. We’re adults – you can use an adult bag. All you need is a large tote or a bag with lots of pockets. If you opt for a tote, be prepared to have small pouches so that you can keep similar items together. Whatever your preference, you don’t need to carry around a pink diaper bag. You can carry a women’s bag that happens to have diapers in it.

Keep Your Hair Long
I grew up on Long Island and all of the moms there – once they hit a certain age – chop off their hair and have men’s haircuts. I don’t know if it’s the water or what but I cannot comprehend this phenomenon. Whenever I see it I think, there’s another person that just gave up. Keep your hair! It doesn’t have to be to your waist – or even to your mid back – but please don’t get a men’s haircut. You don’t need to fully style your hair everyday. A good blowout lasts a couple of days and when in doubt you can opt for a chic bun or pony tail.

I hope these easy tips help you to add a Touch of Luxury to your busy lives!

New & Expectant Mamas at the Golden Globe Awards 2013

adele golden globes 2013

The Golden Globe Award Ceremony aired tonight and congratulations are due – not just for award but for new mamas Adele and Claire Daines and for expectant mama Kristen Bell. New mamas Adele and Claire Danes looked great on the red carpet and you would never know they just had babies. Kristen Bell is expecting and she wore a great dress for her pregnancy.  An empire waist with jeweled detailing that accentuated her shoulders and neck brought your eyes up to her face.  The flowy chiffon in pale lavender looked ethereal and this may be one of Bell’s best looks.

Zara Launches Online Shop In The U.S.

zara online shop
I’ve been a Zara for about ten years when I discovered the brand on a trip to Portugal and Spain. Since then, I’m always checking out the new collections and look books online but I would have to trek to the stores to purchase products. Last month, Zara launched an online shop in the United States. Yes! I was sent a promo code to test out the site and I was very happy with the online experience.

Shopping on Zara.com is seamless. The products are organized well and have great images from many angles. You can even enlarge an item so that it’s bigger than your screen – a first for my online shopping experience. My order arrived promptly several days after I placed it and e-mail communication let me know about every update in the order process. One of my favorite things about shopping online with Zara was that my package was wrapped. Yes, the cardboard box had a plastic sleeve encasing it which was perfect because it was raining the day it arrived. Wet cardboard boxes are my pet peeve so I think Zara went above and beyond with the plastic sleeve on the box. So easy, yet goes a long way in customer service.

You can see the items I purchased with my promo code pictured above. The jacket is for The Tiny Dancer and the shoes and cardigan are for moi. I’ve already worn the shoes out and received lots of compliments. They are really cute – my new favorite – and super comfortable. I was a bit weary of ordering online without trying the stuff on but I used the Zara size chart and everything fit fine – on me and The Tiny Dancer.

Now that I can shop online I will probably be spending more money on Zara because I can do so from the comfort of my couch. Check out the experience for yourself on Zara.com. Happy Shopping!

Kate Hudson at the Something Borrowed Premiere

kate hudson something borrowed premiereKate Hudson looked bright and lovely wearing Versace at the premiere of Something Borrowed in Los Angeles on Tuesday.  She’s worn yellow before and I think it’s a lovely color on her.  I love the dress on her too – the way it accentuates her bust and back – perfect for pregnant mamas!  It’s inspiring to see pregnant women wear spring brights instead of hiding in black.  Lovely!

Stylish Maternity Dresses for Summer

summer maternity dresses
Left to right: French Connection, ASOS Maternity, French Connection

When I was pregnant, I tried to stay away from clothing labeled “maternity” for as long as possible and I managed to get through my pregnancy only buying maternity pants and tees (I needed the extra length around month 8). I was fortunate enough to not be pregnant during the summer, but I feel for the ladies who are carrying extra weight during the hot months.  Fortunately, one of the big summer trends – maxi dresses – work perfectly for pregnant silhouettes and you don’t have to buy a “maternity” dress.  Whether going on vacation, going to a formal event or just going out on the weekend, there are lots of pretty options for mamas-to-be.

When you’re looking for a dress here are some things to keep in mind:

(1) empire waists are flattering on a pregnant body;

(2) maxi dresses work well, are on trend and don’t necessarily need to be “maternty” – just make sure you have enough length in front;

(3) stay away from crazy prints – stripes may be better for the second trimester maybe not for the third trimester;

(4) draw attention up to your face and (growing) bosom with interesting necklines and jewelery; and

(5) be comfortable! You’ve got so much going on making you uncomfortable – don’t add to it with your clothing and accessories.

I looked online and found lots of options – here are some of my favorites…

Lucky Kids for Stylish Moms

Lucky Kids Magazine is out now

Lucky Kids Magazine is out now

It must have been my lucky day because my mailbox contained not one, but TWO Lucky magazines.  I have a subscription to the shopping and style mag, and was quite delighted to see that the extra magazine was the first issue of Lucky Kids.  How perfect is it that the premier issue is for Spring?

I’ve had my fair share of kid-related magazine subscriptions when my little one was younger, but now, everything in those mags seems too babyish for our lives now that she’s 10.  But in flipping through Lucky Kids, it’s refreshing to see that this magazine is very much a fashion magazine, only with a focus on the kiddos.

The content in this spring issue covers everything from shopping suggestions for lunch boxes, whimsical room decor, and even a mommy care section.  The fashion editorials feature school-aged children, which is a sigh of relief for me because every time I see cutesy clothes for the tiny tots, I can’t help but reminisce when my girl was that small.  But for the mommies with little ones, don’t worry because there are plenty of toy and fashion suggestions for babies and toddlers.

I won’t spoil the whole issue for you, but one thing to note is that instead of the random child-related advertisements for x-product, Lucky Kids has full-page ads for the kid-sized brands that you wear, or wish you could wear (hello, J-Lo and the Twins for Gucci)!  I love looking at the kiddy ads because it’s so interesting to see how these big time brands style these cute little models and advertise to the fashion-loving mommies.

The Lucky Kids magazine is a supplement to Lucky Magazine, so you can keep up with fashions for you and your family in the print form.  Check it out on the news stands now!

Looks like M.I.S.S. isn’t the only media coming out with something for the mamas!

Pregnancy Fashion at the 83rd Academy Awards

Academy Award winner for Best Actress, Natalie Portman, made the last of her award show appearances in a purple gown designed by Rodarte. Appropriately enough, Rodarte’s Mulleavy sisters designed the ballet costumes Portman wore in her award-winning role in Black Swan (the extent of their designs seems up for debate though).  Her bump has been steadily growing through the award season and she’s looked glamorous, elegant and effortless at all of the shows.  Her purple Rodarte gown complemented her figure and the color was very pretty on her.  I must say, the white Azzaro gown that Portman wore to the SAG Awards was my favorite.

Also, a quick shout out and congrats to Celine Dion and Penelope Cruz who both recently had babies and who looked great on the red carpet!
